The Smallest Nation in the World, Sealand has just 27 Residents

Sealand, often referred to as the world's smallest country, is a unique micronation that has carved out its own space amidst the giants of the world. Located in the North Sea, 12km east of Suffolk, Sealand covers an area of just 0.004 square kilometers or 43,060 square feet. Despite its minuscule size, it has a rich history and a vibrant community.

Seven miles from the eastern beaches of Great Britain, on the grounds of a military castle, Sealand was established as a sovereign Principality in 1967. This fort, formerly known as Roughs Tower, was built with the intention of being used by the British as a gun platform during World War II. Roy Bates, a former British army major and pirate radio host, later took control of it and proclaimed it to be his own territory.

Today, Sealand is managed by the Bates family, with Michael Roy Bates, self-styled as Prince Michael of Sealand, operating the micronation since 2012. Although not officially recognized by any established sovereign state, Sealand claims to have been de facto recognized by Germany.

Despite its small size, Sealand is home to a population of 27 people as of 2002. It has also hosted various sporting events, including the World Egg Throwing Championship. This tiny nation continues to stand tall, demonstrating that size does not always determine significance.
